Chapter 4: Red cell transfusion to treat anemia in CKD

ثبت نشده
چکیده

USE OF RED CELL TRANSFUSION IN CHRONIC ANEMIA Repeated transfusions or use of an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) are treatment options for chronic anemia in CKD. The choice between these depends on their relative benefits and harms, which vary among patients. For example, patients with a previous stroke have the greatest absolute risk of ESA-related stroke, whereas multiparous women have the highest risk of allosensitization with transfusion. Although the clinical importance of allosensitization is disputed, it may delay or reduce the possibility of future kidney transplantation.

Background and Objective: Anemia is one of the major disabling consequences in chronic kidney (CKD) disease which has different etiologies .Inadequate production of Erythropoietin (EPO) is the main cause of anemia. Iron shortage is the other important cause. The aim of this study is to evaluate Anemia Prevalence and iron storage in CKD patients in pre-dialysis and hemodialysis stages.   Mater...

2015 Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy: Guidelines for Renal Anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease

Renal anemia is a complication of chronic kidney disease. Guidelines for safe and effective treatment in patients with renal anemia are needed. The Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy (JSDT) published guidelines for the treatment of renal anemia in chronic hemodialysis patients in 2004 and in hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, predialysis, and pediatric patients in 2008. These two publication...

Erythropoietin Friend or Foe in Chronic Kidney Disease Anemia: An Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials, Observational Studies and Meta-analyses

Background: Anemia is a common clinical problem in patients with chronic kidney disease and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Erythropoietin is a hormone synthesized in kidney responsible for red blood cell maturation in the bone marrow. It is deficient in majority of patients with advanced kidney disease predisposing to anemia. Therapeutic alternatives are recombinant human...

Anemia and red blood cell transfusion in critically ill cardiac patients

Anemia and red blood cell (RBC) transfusion occur frequently in hospitalized patients with cardiac disease. In this narrative review, we report the epidemiology of anemia and RBC transfusion in hospitalized adults and children (excluding premature neonates) with cardiac disease, and on the outcome of anemic and transfused cardiac patients. Both anemia and RBC transfusion are common in cardiac p...

Targeting Hypoxia-Inducible Factors for the Treatment of Anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients.

BACKGROUND Anemia, a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD), has previously been attributed primarily to decreased production of erythropoietin. More recently, it has become apparent that the etiology of anemia involves several other factors, most notably dysfunctional iron metabolism, mediated via increased hepcidin activity and reduced clearance. Current management of anemia in p...
